Your linkedin photo, it’s more than just a photo! It is a key element of your personal and professional brand!

Did you know that having a professional profile picture on Linkedin makes your profile 21x more likely to be viewed by others? This includes recruiters, hiring managers, relevant professionals in your industry, and so many others.

But don’t worry in today’s post I’m going to help you make a great first impression on LinkedIn with your Linkedin profile photo!

And no, you will not need to hire a professional photographer! With these tips you can totally take a professional and high quality LinkedIn profile photo at home!

What makes a great LinkedIn profile photo?

  • It is authentic: use a picture of yourself to give other’s an impression of who you are. If your Linkedin connection would meet you tomorrow, either to network, or for a job interview, you want to give them in advance a clear idea of what you look like.

  • Make sure your picture is up to date: don’t use a photo from 10 years ago. It just needs to reflect what you look like on a daily basis.

  • It conveys your personal brand: are you someone who is serious, or someone who is more casual?

A lot of people wear suit and shirts on their linkedin photo, and that will definitely have an effect of how you are perceived by others.

But you totally don’t have to, if this is not who you are!

It definitely isn’t who I am!

  • Use the right facial expression:

Rule of thumb is smile! Having a LinkedIn with a profile picture where you are smiling will make you seem more approachable!

Photofeeler has ran a study with a sample of 800 profile pictures, they found that people view you as more likable, competent, and influential if you smile in your LinkedIn profile picture.

And smiles that show teeth were much more liked than closed-mouth smiles.

This is such an interesting study, that I had to make an entire video about it, make sure you subscribe so you don’t miss it right here.

With this said, if you are someone who is more serious, it is totally ok to look serious on your picture. Remember, it needs to reflect who you are, and your branding.

  • you are the focal point in the picture: no family or a group photo on your LinkedIn profile picture. Your profile is about you, and so should be your picture!
